What is vehicle acquisition tax?

Korean vehicle acquisition tax is a local tax due upon first registration. Rates depend on vehicle type and personal vs commercial use: 7%/4% for passenger, 5%/4% for trucks (≤1t), 4% flat for compact (≤1,000cc) with up to 500,000 KRW discount on prices under 10M KRW, and 7% for EV/hydrogen with up to 1.4M KRW discount (2024 reference, adjusted yearly). It is separate from the annual auto tax.

Frequently asked questions

When and where is it paid?
Within 60 days of registration, at the local Vehicle Registration Office or Wetax (wetax.go.kr). Dealers usually handle this for new cars and the amount appears on the quotation.
Same rate for used cars?
Yes — rates by type are identical, but the tax base is the higher of the contract price or the official assessed value. If the contract is below the assessed value, the assessed value is used.
How is the EV discount applied?
Automatically at registration — no separate application. The bill issued by the registration office reflects the discount. The yearly limit is set by the Ministry of Environment; verify the current cap on Wetax or the unified low-emission vehicle portal.
What is the regional development bond?
A separate mandatory bond purchase at registration, varying by vehicle and engine size. You can also sell it back at a discount (about 5–10%). This calculator covers only acquisition tax — not the bond, license plate, or stamp fees.

Reference only. Covers passenger, truck, compact, and eco vehicle classes. Two-wheelers, vans 11+ seats, and specialty vehicles use other rates not modeled here. The EV/hydrogen discount cap (1.4M KRW) is the 2024 reference and changes yearly. Bond purchase, plate, and stamp fees are not included. Confirm the actual amount on Wetax or the registration office.
